Weekend Wardrobe: Cool Tones

IMG_9048There is no other way to spend a casual, sunny and cool Sunday, than at brunch with friends! Since I was feeling a bit lazy from the busy weekend, I went for a more laid-back look that would also work well with the weather. This outfit embraces a casual cool vibe with the neutral colors, cuffed denim jeans, and white flowy kimono. I had to obviously top the outfit off with a few of my favorite accessories – reflective sunnies and my TanneryLA bag!

Hope everyone had a great weekend, and is refreshed for another week ahead! Cheers!

IMG_8627This is my attempt to try to stay cool, yet edgy chic, while existing in Los Angeles. Also, the front tuck – business in the front, party in the back – is one of my favorite ways to style a top and pants together. It is a way to define your waist, without making it the focal point. To add, the shorts used to be pants, but I decided to cut them because I couldn’t find black cutoffs that I liked…DIY fact.

Restaurant Review: Church & State

IMG_6109.JPG

Restaurant Name: Church + State
Location: 1850 Industrial St, Los Angeles, CA 90021
Halfsies Rating: ★★★★★
Halfsies Bank: $$$$
Genre: French Great for: Date night

This place is fantastic for a glass of wine and some appetizers. If you’re going all-out, its great for full on dinner as well, but trust me when I say you won’t be able to move after a full meal at Church + State.

The ambience is simply magical: with rustic wood, artsy lights, and a flare of French decor, the dimly lit restaurant is small and cozy enough to have you feeling that you jetted off to Europe, just for dinner. On spring and summer nights (or heck, pretty much any night in LA), long tables are set in the outside area to allow for dining under the stars.

I advise getting here early if you don’t have a reservation, because if you show up past seven you’ll be standing in the doorway, tortured by the delicious aromas that won’t be yours until you’ve long been salivating.

Another plus of getting here early: the chef loves passing out goat-cheese puff pastry, and boy am I a sucker for anything bread and cheese. Follow that with the standard bread board (served warm with a butter so thick and creamy that even French natives won’t be unphased), and you’ll be full before you’ve even put in your order.

For the cultured wino – this is your place. I’m a happy camper on any night that = a glass of pino noir (there are so many good ones to choose from) and an order of escargot. Don’t make the mistake of thinking appetizers are meant to be just that – apps can go a long way and completely fill you up!

My go-to items: Escargots de Bourgogne en Croûte (or breaded escargot for you non-francophiles), Os à Moelle (roasted bone marrow), and one of their many “tarts” which are basically fancy french pizzas.

For the less adventurous, not to worry: there are plenty of more mainstream options, like mac&cheese, french onion soup, salads, and various chicken, salmon, and duck entrees.

Near the up and coming arts district of DTLA, when you’re done with your meal you can stroll the surroundings of the restaurant and stop in one or more local bars/boutiques! Date night at it’s finest.

OR, just stay at the bar (below). It’s.so.freaking.cute!!!! ♥

Restaurant Review: Phlight

Halfsies Rating: ★★★★½
Halfsies Bank: $$
Genre: Wine/Tapas Bar
Great for: Sharing, dinner, wine, a date, or catching up with friends

Right in the uptown area of my hometown, resides one of my favorite restaurants, Phlight.  This Spanish inspired, tapas restaurant, provides a delectable selection of food, and international wine and beer to choose from. There is such a warm, amorous, and cultivated atmosphere, that will make you want to go back for more. My friends and I love going at the end of a stressful week to dine and unwind. We love getting a few different dishes to share, accompanying glasses of vino, and of course, ending our delicious meal with some sweets.

What we ordered: Sangria/Vino, Sweet Potato Fries, Pork Belly Tacos, Empanadas, Paella, & Mexican Chocolate Souffle.

Recommend: Paella, Sangria, and Mexican Chocolate Souffle.

LA Arts District Flea Market

IMG_5159.JPG

I LOVE LOVE LOVE hunting for treasures. Flea markets & farmers markets have quick become my favorite places to visit on the weekends due to their super low-key, earthy, peaceful vibes. I’ve been frequenting the Brentwood Farmers Market forever but just went to the downtown LA Arts District Flea Market for the first time and was so impressed that I couldn’t help but share!

The Arts District Flea Market is as artsy-crazy as the Arts District itself. The market is hosted inside a warehouse in DTLA, and stepping foot inside is like stepping foot into vintage wonderland. If you’re looking for an impossible-to-find antique fridge, typewriter, sewing machine, table, lamp….. ETC! this is your place.

There’s also a whole mess of eclectic art, jewelry, clothing, and home decor! Prices are a little higher than an average flea market, but considering the quality of the gems you find here, I’d say it’s well worth it!

Even if you’re not looking to buy anything, the Arts District Flea Market is a ton of fun to stop by and walk around! There’s music, a super fun crowd, and occasionally there are games to play too! (Check out the vintage arcade basketball set below!). When you’re done at the market, go have dinner at one of the many eateries in the Industrial / Arts Districts of DTLA.

The market is open 11AM – 7PM every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Happy treasure hunting!!

What we loved: $39 brunch includes unlimited tapas & drinks for a two-hour period

What we’d improve: If you don’t make a rezzie, tough luck. We wish there were better accomodations for walk-ins, but this place is so great, we’re actually okay with making brunch plans ahead of time.

What we’d recommend: Ask your server to bring out an assortment of dishes, proportionate to the number of guests you have at your table. Once you’ve tried everything on the extensive brunch menu, you can request seconds (and thirds) of your favorite items!! I’m in love with the empanadas, brussel sprouts, sushi rolls, yucca fries, and meatballs!!

Be forewarned… on weekends Zengo is known for DJs spinning hot tunes! It can get loud, but is a perfect way to keep the party going on Sunday Funday!

Great for: Happy hour

What I loved: Guac & margaritas! And their carnitas are absolutely drool worthy… among the best I’ve had. EVER.

What I’d improve: I’d love to see more drink options on the happy hour menu.

What I’d recommend: The carnitas, shrimp taquitos, and hibiscus margarita!

Looking for an extra “cool factor”? The restaurant sits facing the street with a super airy vibe! The front facade is completely open, letting in the warm breezes that define LA. It’s a super fun way to people watch while enjoying yourself :)

20140514-225437.jpg

Don’t forget to ask about drink specials! Servers are all super well versed in their offerings and are always coming up with great new mixes! My fave are the margs, especially the hibiscus margarita and the blood orange ruby grapefruit margarita!

Yum yum! Enjoy friends! This place is a must visit!!

Restaurant Review: Daily Dose Cafe

20140430-211358.jpg

Restaurant Name: Daily Dose Cafe
Location: 1820 Industrial St #104, Los Angeles, CA 90021
Halfsies Rating: ★★★★☆
Halfsies Bank: $$$
Great for: Brunch, quick bites, outdoor dining, groups

What I loved: Fresh juices, daily specials, large portions, ambience

What I’d improve: Parking can be tricky and combos get a little pricey

What I’d recommend: The “white juice”, nutella mocha, and farmer sandwich

20140430-211343.jpg

Above: Nutella Mocha & “White Juice” (coconut water, coconut meat, bananas, dates)

20140430-211350.jpg

Above: Kale couscous

20140430-211440.jpg

Above: The Farmer Sandwich (Vegetarian and stuffed with goodness! This makes any carnivore happy to forego meat)

20140430-211450.jpg

Above: The Butcher Sandwich (Dijon mustard with sopressata and pickles)

 20140430-211251.jpg

Located in the heart of downtown Los Angeles, Daily Dose Cafe is super artsy. Rustic exposed brick and an overgrowth of verdure and flowers define the cafe’s “look”, while untreated woods make for great art pieces and mismatched tables. The  Cafe is located in an alley full of light – there are candles to line the walkways and brighten tables, string lights are laced overhead, and vintage chandeliers hang along the ivy. While most guests sit outside along the narrow alley, there are options for indoor seating as well.

Beyond the atmosphere and decor of the place, the food is delish. The menu is super simple, totally fresh, and LA-healthy.
