Mammoth Vibes

IMG_7944If you had to choose ONE place in the entire world to go to with a snap of a finger, whenever you needed to unwind, where would it be?

My answer would be Mammoth, hands down. I am sure some of you already knew that based on older posts. Whenever I have an ounce of time, I always make an effort to travel there. I have so much history and so many memories there because Mammoth was a staple family vacationing spot every summer growing up.

We all lead such busy lives, where we are constantly hustling from one enterprise to another. It is extremely important to TREAT YO SELF, every once in a while. Mammoth is my treat. I am completely and utterly in love with this near perfect place.

Most tourists (and even locals) go there after a long day on the slopes or a strenuous hike, and cool off with a flight of beers, which is about $5 (for 6 different tastings) and some snacks (yes, they added an eatery in there)! I highly recommend that you go! The Golden Trout Ale and Double Nut Brown are my favorite! The inside of the brewery is spacious and cozy, but if you want to enjoy the view of the mountains or fresh air, there is a lovely outdoor area with benches to relax.

In case you’re not all about buying these fancy schmansy kits (we feel ya), but still wanna be a badass NYE host, you can  follow our step-by-step guide below to recreate our magical mojito balls!

〉〉Step 1: Combine 1/4 tsp calcium lactate (you can get some on amazon) with 1 tsp sugar, 5-6 mint leaves, and 3 lime wedges. Muddle in a highball glass, add in 1 oz white rum & 2oz club soda, and filter with a sieve. Place the filtered liquid in a glass and prepare your pipettes!

〉〉Step 2: Rip up a few mint leaves and place in an ice cube mold. Use your pipettes to add your liquid mixture from above to fill each ice cube mold. Place in the freezer until completely hard (about 20 minutes).

〉〉Step 3: While you wait for your cubes to freeze, create your sodium alginate bath! Dissolve 2 grams sodium alginate (you can find anything on amazon!) in 2 cups of water. Make sure the sodium alginate completely dissolves… we used a hand blender because the stuff can be so tricky!! You’ll also want to set aside a separate bath of pure water.

〉〉Step 4: Remove frozen cubes from the freezer and drop into the sodium alginate bath. Let them float around for about 3 minutes, stirring verrrrry gently and making sure that they don’t get stuck to each other! You’ll see them start to gelatinize into little balls (so fun!!!). One by one, spoon your balls from the alginate bath to the water bath.

〉〉Step 5: Remove the mojito balls from the water bath and place on spoons to serve!

〉〉Step 6: ENJOY! That’s right, eat ’em up and experience a mojito ball that explodes in your mouth. Such a cool phenomenon, these little guys are definitely worth playing scientist for an afternoon! Plus, your friends will think you’re a scientific genius!

Have a wonderful & safe New Year’s friends!! We hope these little drink balls add a pop of magic to your night! ♥

Inside Diamondback Stadium!

I just got back from a trip to Phoenix, where I started every morning chugging espresso <<above>> in the comforts of my heavenly Ritz-Carlton suite (holla at free upgrades! thx Ritz!). My trip was primarily work-oriented, but was full of amazing surprises!

First… the Ritz is crazy about succulents. I never really thought that I liked succulents until this trip! They were everywhere, paired with driftwood and bright sands. LOVE IT. This is a perfect DIY home decor idea.

Second, my rental car was MIA when I arrived, so I got another upgrade (wait for it)… to a BRIGHT ORANGE CHALLENGER. This babe of a car was calendar photo-shoot worthy.

The third, and probably best surprise of all, was a private tour of Diamondback Stadium! The Dbacks are a client, so they hooked it up big time. We ate a lunch of salads & spritzers while overlooking the field, then followed with a VIP tour of everything Diamondback.

Restaurant Review: Bizarra Capital

Restaurant Name: Bizarra Capital
Location: 12706 Philadelphia St, Whittier CA
Halfsies Rating: ★★★★☆
Halfsies Bank: $$
Genre: Mexican
Great for: Brunch with girlfriends

It’s a rainy Sunday here in LA, and what better way to spend a pre-Oscars morning than mimosa-brunching with the GFs?

We decided to try out Bizarra Capital, a spot recently featured in the LAtimes as both trendy & delicious.

What we loved: super cheap, super delicious, super filling, and super-cute brick backdrops for photoshooting our rainy-day outfits (score!)

What we’d improve: the place doesn’t have bottomless mimosas! For us, that’s a necessity. But at only $4 a pop, no one’s really complaining

What we’d recommend: chilaquiles, huevos rancheros, & agave syrup margaritas

Halfsies Launch!

Hello and welcome to Halfsies!! We are so excited to finally announce the launch of our blog! The concept has been a long time in the making, and our inspiration over the past few weeks has been rampant. After several meetings and many mimosas, we’re finally ready with a concept and direction that is, well, direction-less.

To elaborate – when there was first talk of starting a blog, we struggled when asked where our focus would lie. Our real passions align with categories neatly labeling our header bar, but in all reality Halfsies is a testament to life young, free, and spontaneous. Our journeys here will cross the lines of fashion and food, but will also go far beyond to the shenanigans that define our everyday lives. We believe in the beauty of sharing the things that make us happy, and hope that these things will in turn inspire and bring contentment to our readers. We love getting ideas and insight from others, and hope that you too will seek to collaborate with us!

The foundation of Halfsies is set in our friendship. We met the first day of first grade, and have been friends ever since. After nearly 20 years as hapa sisters, we’ve seen our share of ups and downs, laughs and tears. Although some elements of our personalities are poles apart, our love for fashion, food, fun, & adventure always seem to align. Our fervor is the DNA of who we are as a team: a little bit of this, and a little bit of that – forming Halfsies.

We hope that you enjoy what we have to say! Stay tuned :)
