Tannery LA x Arda Marie

Processed with VSCOcam with a5 presetLos Angeles based designers and sisters, Carine (left) and Arda (right) founded a boutique line of bags and jewelry, which initially began as an outlet of self expression, eventually leading to the establishment of Arda Marie Jewelry and Tannery LA. Each of the collections are filled with simple and versatile pieces — leathers, stones, and metallics, that are great for any occasion! Be sure to check out their work at Unique LA in December!

On the Road: Wanderlust

Processed with VSCOcam with g3 preset

Wanderlust (n): a strong desire for or impulse to wander or travel and explore the world.

Often times, people associate travel as a form of escape – those who like to travel, are essentially running away from something. As Halfsies, we feel that those who have a strong desire to travel or explore, are not running away, but searching for something. Quite possibly searching for themselves. I guess our entire life is based on little moments of self-identity, but travel and exploration can really uncover a side of ourselves or the world, that we never knew existed.

Grab some friends, clothes, a camera, and jump in the car. You never know what you will find.

On our road trip to Mammoth, we were lucky enough to be surrounded by beautiful scenery – fields, open roads, ranches, and abandoned churches and buildings. We captured these graceful and alluring places, Halfsies Style…which is a photoshoot, obviously!

Take a glimpse into our spontaneous ‘On the Road: Wanderlust’ photoshoot. See how you can encompass summer pieces into fall outfits, with the use of flannels, cut-offs, denim jackets, sun hats, florals, maxis, boots, and fringe! You will also be exposed to our favorite term, “shoulder it”. Enjoy!

Birthday Weekend in Mammoth

Processed with VSCOcam with p5 preset

Life is all about making the most of our time. It is important to take time to explore, relax, laugh, dance, and cultivate creativity. For me, the best time to do this is on the weekends. It is my time to reset, breathe, and shake off the work week. This past weekend was a little more vital than the rest, being that it was my birthday. The only obvious way to celebrate was to take a road trip to one of my favorite places, with some of my favorite babes.

The reason why I love Mammoth is because it is so beautiful, peaceful, and as weird as this sounds, non-judgmental. The people and the atmosphere give off such good vibes, and it feels so rejuvenating to spend time there. The entire weekend was perfect, from the weather to the random adventures and people we came across.

I don’t want to give Mammoth all the credit, because it does help when you have beautiful/perfect humans to enjoy it with. They make those moments and the time you spend in places like these, worthwhile. They complete those moments. Tie them together.

I’ll stop with the sappy talk now and let you enjoy the photos! Cheers!

Road Trip Playlist: Mammoth

Screen Shot 2014-09-13 at 11.43.44 PMA road trip is never complete without a playlist. I am the type of person who spends hours upon hours putting together a very intricate playlist. I consider the people who will be in the car with me, our surroundings, and our destination. Okay, maybe you don’t have to go that in depth when creating a playlist, but good music is vital for the drive.

The below playlist is for our mini road trip to Mammoth this coming weekend. It contains folky, indie, country, soulful music, which I feel are staples for a Mammoth trip. Nothing like listening to some Johnnyswim and The Civil Wars, while making my way through the Eastern Sierra! Check it out!

Leave a comment with some of your favorite Road Trip songs that we could add to our list!

Travel Diary: Chicago

IMG_6667.JPG

I spent Labor Day Weekend in the Windy City, and naturally ate and drank my way through town! Read on for some of my favorite restaurants & activities!!

Millennium Park

A trip to Millennium Park is obligatory when in Chicago! The Buckingham Fountains and the famous “Bean” are must-dos every time I’m in Chicago, and are always worth it for the amazing photo ops!

The Signature Room at the top of the Hancock Tower

Love the Signature Lounge, because it’s free to get to the top of the Hancock! Instead of paying $20 to go to the observatory deck, you can go to the bar level and spend that money on delicious mojitos and snacks!! Eat and drink while enjoying breathtaking views of the city.

IMG_6675.JPG
IMG_6674.JPG
IMG_6459.JPG

The Purple Pig

This place is wine / cheese / cold cut heaven! It took us two hours to get a table for seven (beware: the restaurant doesn’t accept reservations!). There’s a cute patio where you can wait, so be prepared to grab a bottle of wine and enjoy the ambience!

IMG_6666.JPGIMG_6669.JPG

Eataly

Eataly is a combination of Costco and Italy. If you’ve ever been to Italy, you walk into Eataly and realize that it’s a much cleaner, more organized version of every Italian street market! There are various restaurants, shops, and wine / cheese / meat stations throughout the two-story Costco-like warehouse. Basically, it’s the best place ever!! (DOUBLE BONUSES – It’s just down the street from TopShop ANDDDD you can finish your night at the Nutella station!!!)

IMG_6510.JPGIMG_6678.JPGIMG_6676.JPGIMG_6677.JPGIMG_6672.JPG

The RIver Boat Tours

We did the Architectural River Boat Tour, which is a 75 minute tour on the river that explains the history of Chicago through it’s impressive architecture! No matter the time of day, it’s lovely to sit atop the boat, sip some vino, and enjoy the sunshine and the breezes of Lake Michigan!

IMG_6670.JPGIMG_6671.JPG

Wrigley Field

Historic Wrigley Field is worth a visit, even if you can’t get tickets to a game! We sat outside at a bar across the street and cheered with the stands every time there was a homer!! Such a fun part of town, it’s hard NOT to be a bandwagon Cubs fan!

IMG_6668.JPG

Pequod’s Deep Dish Pizza

You can’t leave Chicago without eating deep dish (at least a few times!). Pequod’s is the best because they — GASP — never wash their skillets. That’s right, they wipe their pans down but they never wash them! This creates a deliciously sweet caramelized layer on the crust.  The sweet + savory combo is unreal and way too delicious.

IMG_6385.JPG

Suffice it to say that my trip to Chicago was a foodie experience. When combined with lots of vino and my very best friends, the city has become one of my favorites! (Just don’t bring this Cali girl there in the Winter, PLEASE!!).

What sites did I miss in the Windy City??! Share below!

Travel Diary: Spain

After 2 weeks in Spain, I feel like I’m on a high of sangria & sunshine! If you’re planning an upcoming visit to Southern Spain (if you’re not, you should be!), I hope you visit some of my favorite spots! These are MUST-DO, MUST-VISIT places in beautiful Andalusia.

»RONDA, SPAIN«

This little gem of a town is set in the hills of Spain and is known as the “White City” overlooking the Gorge El Tajo. The most famous bridge in town is absolutely breath-taking, and is over 100 meters tall (that’s like a 30 story building!!). You can have a drink at a cafe or stay in a hotel that sits on the cliffs overlooking the gorge and the beautiful bridge. Make sure to stop at the museum inside of the bride for a more detailed look!

Have a picnic in the Alameda Park and catch the view of endless rolling hills and vineyards! There’s also a historic bull ring in Ronda with a small museum to visit.

This town is GORGEOUS and definitely one of my favorites in Spain. There are endless tiny cobblestone roads to explore, littered with cafes and shops. Ronda is must when you’re in Spain!

IMG_5440.JPGIMG_5437.JPGIMG_5327.JPGIMG_5447.JPG

»GIBRALTAR«

When you’re this close to Gibraltar, there’s no excuse not to visit! There’s a gondola line that can take you to the top of the Rock of Gibraltar, where you’ll see views of Africa. Beware of the f*@$* crazy monkeys (Barbary macaques) that have taken over the rock – they’re completely desensitized to humans and will jump on you and steal your snacks!

If you have time, stop to see St Michael’s Cave, the Apes’ Den, the Great Siege Tunnels, the Moorish castle, Military Heritage Centre, the 100-tonne supergun and the ‘Gibraltar: A City Under Siege’ exhibition. This is a FULL DAY with TONSSSS of walking (but worth every step!).

IMG_5311.JPGIMG_5210.JPG
IMG_5304.JPG

»SEVILLA«

Sevilla is cultural overload and worth way more than one day of your time! Make sure to visit the Cathedral, which is the third largest in Europe. It’s full of artifacts and incredible architecture, so allocate at least 2 hours to see the entire thing.

Other must-sees include the  Plaza de Espana, the Alcazar Palace, the Plaza de Toros, and one of the many Arab baths!

IMG_5892.JPGIMG_5893.JPGIMG_5797.JPG

»GRANADA«

Granada is such a fun city to just stroll around and explore! Make sure you’re ready to WALK, because the Alhambra Fortress is one of Granada’s main attractions! The fortress is full of patios and gardens and culture! It’s super picturesque and a great place to take photos! When you’re done, stop at St Nicolas Point. Make sure to see the Cathedral, the Royal Chapel, and the Great Mosque. If you want to shop, walk along the tiny street of Alcaiceria to find tourist shops and souvenirs.

IMG_5755.JPGIMG_5744.JPGIMG_5781.JPG

»MARBELLA«

Marbella is a BABE of a town. It’s the chicest beach town around and is THE party scene of Andalusia. I had more fun here than I ever would have thought. This town is Spain’s best kept secret — it’s the beachier, more laid-back Barcelona of Spain! Don’t plan to go out before midnight, and make sure you’re ready to fiesta until past 4am!

Marbella also has gorgeous beaches where you can rent cabanas / beach chairs for a few euros! The food is to die for, and if you’re trying to shop for some haute couture, Louis V, Dior, Hermes, Ferragamo, and all their friends basically line the sand. Heaven on earth?

IMG_5842.JPGIMG_5332

»MALAGA«

Super cute city with great history. Stop at the Moorish Fortress, and go to see Picasso’s house! The Cathedral is gorgeous (aren’t they all?) and is lined by adorable squares where you can grab a beer and listen to street musicians.

IMG_5433.JPG
IMG_5647.JPG

»MOROCCO«

(You can take a ferry across from several locations in Spain! Read more about my trip to Morocco in a separate post, coming soon!)

IMG_5529.JPG

»BOLONIA BEACH«

AWESOME TURQUOISE WATER!! But beware, this beach is pretty windy and the waves are much bigger than those on the Mediterranean side.

IMG_5558.JPG

»NERJA«

Love this little beach city! It’s known for sitting on beautiful ocean side cliffs. There are so many small private beaches that you have to take a little bus down the cliffs to reach the most exclusive among them! When you’re there, rent a small sail boat and get lost at sea.

IMG_6120.JPG

»TORREMOLINOS«

Noteworthy beach! Check it out if you have time.

IMG_6122.JPG

»CADIZ«

Another beautiful beach city! The ruins are super cool and the cathedral is gorgeous, but spend most of your time at the beach.

IMG_5674.JPG

I’m basically ready to become a professional adventurer! My trip to Spain consisted of new sites and experiences every single day, but I wouldn’t have it any other way! What I’d do to be back on my €6 floatie, dozing in the midst of the Mediterranean, sangria in hand.

Where did you spend your summer holiday!? Where should Halfsies go next?? Share below!!

LA Arts District Flea Market

IMG_5159.JPG

I LOVE LOVE LOVE hunting for treasures. Flea markets & farmers markets have quick become my favorite places to visit on the weekends due to their super low-key, earthy, peaceful vibes. I’ve been frequenting the Brentwood Farmers Market forever but just went to the downtown LA Arts District Flea Market for the first time and was so impressed that I couldn’t help but share!

The Arts District Flea Market is as artsy-crazy as the Arts District itself. The market is hosted inside a warehouse in DTLA, and stepping foot inside is like stepping foot into vintage wonderland. If you’re looking for an impossible-to-find antique fridge, typewriter, sewing machine, table, lamp….. ETC! this is your place.

There’s also a whole mess of eclectic art, jewelry, clothing, and home decor! Prices are a little higher than an average flea market, but considering the quality of the gems you find here, I’d say it’s well worth it!

Even if you’re not looking to buy anything, the Arts District Flea Market is a ton of fun to stop by and walk around! There’s music, a super fun crowd, and occasionally there are games to play too! (Check out the vintage arcade basketball set below!). When you’re done at the market, go have dinner at one of the many eateries in the Industrial / Arts Districts of DTLA.

The market is open 11AM – 7PM every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Happy treasure hunting!!

San Diego Adventures!

This weekend, my friend and I made our way to San Diego to go see Sara Bareilles in concert. We had a great time eating, drinking, catching up with friends, and seeing Ms. Sara B!

Our first stop of the mini adventure was playing catch up with one of our very best friends, London! You may recognize this lovely lady from some of our past blog posts, or even her own reputable blog, ‘London, like the city!’ She took us to Caroline’s Seaside Cafe, which overlooked the beach! It had a great atmosphere, with an even greater selection of food. I ordered the Pan Seared Salmon Salad – there is no full sized photo, because I was too hungry from the drive! Whoopsies :)
IMG_3039

Before heading off to see Sara B, my brother and his fiancé, who also live in SD (and attended the concert with us) took us to a local favorite and popular brewery called, Ballast Point. We all ordered a Sculpin, I had the IPA on Nitro, it was smooth and very refreshing! I am just dipping my feet into the IPA pool, so it was a good starting point for me. After we finished our pre-dinner/concert drinks, we headed on down the street to get our grub (and more drink) on!

IMG_3019 IMG_3023

We went to a gastropub called, Craft & Commerce for dinner, and it was AWESOME! For appetizers, we got season fries and bacon cracker jacks (sounds a little odd, but so delish)! For dinner, my friend and I split the Mac & Cheese and Korean Fried Chicken Wings. The wings were as hot as they look in the photo below. As for drinks, we both got IPA cocktails and Amber Ales! Oh we are NOT done! Wait until you see where we went next…
IMG_3029 IMG_3033 IMG_3035 IMG_3059

Yes, we were all pretty full, but everyone knows that there is a second stomach for dessert! Twenty minutes before the start of the concert, we rushed over to the BottleCraft Beer Shop to go pick up some Pubcakes! Yup, beer + cupcakes. The flavors of the cupcakes rotate every week, showcasing a different beer in each one. (Clockwise) The one with the yellow frosting was Cup O’ Hefen, which had Ballast Point Wahoo Wheat Coriander spice cake & citrus buttercream; Punkin Vegan, which had North Coast Old Stock Ale Pumpkin & maple frosting; Irish Carbomb, which had Guiness chocolate cake, Irish cream frosting, & whiskey ganache; Portzilla, which had Stone Smoked Porter cake, chocolate coffee ganache, & caramelized coconut.  They were all sooooo delicious and not too sweet! My favorites would have to be the Portzilla and the Cup O’ Hefen!
IMG_3087

The following morning, we got up early and stopped at a local spot in Encinitas, called Swami’s Cafe, which is known for their Acaí bowls. This cafe was located in the cutest beach community, where people were either riding bikes, running, soaking up the sun at the beach, or eating at this local spot! We both ordered the Acaí bowls for breakfast, and boy, were they yummy! The granola, fruit, bee pollen, and coconut shreds made for such great toppings! I definitely recommend trying it out if you are ever in the area!
IMG_3090 IMG_3091That basically concludes our trip! Unfortunately, we did not come across Carmen San Diego, but hopefully this clip of Sara Bareilles covering ‘Chandelier’ by Sia, will make do! She is breathtaking!

Londonlikethecity

Name: London

Blog Name: London, Like the city

Nickname: Lond, Londy, Londo, Londonbridges

Why did you start blogging? I first started food blogging in college, but then realized I wanted a creative outlet to document and share all of my interests, fun projects and favorite things.

How did you come up with the name, ‘London, Like the City’?  I wanted a blog name that tied to my own name so it could grow with me as my focus and interests changed. I end up having to say “like the city” all the time when meeting new people or ordering coffee, so it stuck .

What has been the highlight of your blogging career so far? All of the creative friends and people I’ve met that I never would have came across without the blog world! I also got to attend some fun events this year, like the LuckyFABB Conference and Bloguettes workshop. And of course, getting to collaborate with cool brands I love is always exciting.

Where do you get your inspiration? Pinterest, long drives, the beach.

What is the mantra for your blog? “London, Like the City” is a San Diego-based healthy lifestyle diary that celebrates everything from food and DIY projects to stylized living and holistic health. It’s a creative place to document my interests, inspiration, and journey to finding balance & purpose as a twenty-something!
