Restaurant Review: Daily Dose Cafe

Restaurant Name: Daily Dose Cafe
Location: 1820 Industrial St #104, Los Angeles, CA 90021
Halfsies Rating: ★★★★☆
Halfsies Bank: $$$
Great for: Brunch, quick bites, outdoor dining, groups

What I loved: Fresh juices, daily specials, large portions, ambience

What I’d improve: Parking can be tricky and combos get a little pricey

What I’d recommend: The “white juice”, nutella mocha, and farmer sandwich

Above: Nutella Mocha & “White Juice” (coconut water, coconut meat, bananas, dates)

Above: Kale couscous

Above: The Farmer Sandwich (Vegetarian and stuffed with goodness! This makes any carnivore happy to forego meat)

20140430-211450.jpg

Above: The Butcher Sandwich (Dijon mustard with sopressata and pickles)

Located in the heart of downtown Los Angeles, Daily Dose Cafe is super artsy. Rustic exposed brick and an overgrowth of verdure and flowers define the cafe’s “look”, while untreated woods make for great art pieces and mismatched tables. The  Cafe is located in an alley full of light – there are candles to line the walkways and brighten tables, string lights are laced overhead, and vintage chandeliers hang along the ivy. While most guests sit outside along the narrow alley, there are options for indoor seating as well.

Beyond the atmosphere and decor of the place, the food is delish. The menu is super simple, totally fresh, and LA-healthy.

Styles of Stagecoach

Music aside, festival weekends mean two things: great food & great fashion! Check out some of this weekend’s most #winning looks!

Crop tops: These lil babies never did go out of style! Paired with daisy dukes the look is simple and complete! For added flair, try patterned shorts! We love weathered denim, acid dyes, and large sunflower prints.

20140428-005058.jpg20140428-005306.jpg20140428-005502.jpg

Get creative: Rip, cut, & tie a black tee into your own festival-artsy creation!

20140428-005137.jpg

Creme/white/denim dresses: This covered look is fun and flirty in a Ralph Lauren patriotic way! My favorites are from Free People and Planet Blue.

20140428-005247.jpg20140428-095648.jpg

Overalls & All Over Denim: Normally a definite no-no, I’m opening up to the idea of all over denim. From funky overalls to creatively paired chambrays and vests, denim is everywhere at Stagecoach – so much so that I’m ready to bring head to toe denim into my everyday life (let’s just keep it multi-tonal, please)

20140428-005152.jpg

Prints: Don’t forget traditional prints! These are ever perfect for a festival like stagecoach – I love plaid, floral, and American-themed designs!

Steamed Fish and Veggies

Screen Shot 2014-04-23 at 10.05.34 PMSteamed Fish

So much to do, but so little time? Constantly eating out because you’re too drained to cook after a long day of school or work? Well, you are in luck! We have a recipe for you that is fast, easy, healthy, and delicious!

Ingredients:
Fish loins/fillets (I get the frozen pack of tilapia loins from Costco)
Veggies (dill, onions, kale, spinach, bell peppers, etc)
Lemon and Capers (optional)
Spices (pink himalayan salt, lemon pepper, cayenne pepper, etc)
Foil
Pan & lid

Steps:

Lay out a bed of chopped veggies on the foil – this is the foundation for your fish and a great way to prevent it from sticking to the foil.

IMG_9487

Once you put the fish over your veggies, squeeze some lemon on top. This gives the fish a little zing and is a great way to keep the spices on the fish.

IMG_9488

Sprinkle your flavor – I usually add some Pink Himalayan Salt or Lemon Pepper/Cayenne Pepper. Once I put on the seasoning, I cover the fish with the lemons I previously used. IMG_9489

IMG_9490

Tightly fold up your fish in the foil – you want to keep it as compact as possible! Once you’ve done that, put it on the pan and cover it!

IMG_9491

IMG_9492

Put the heat on medium-high for 15 minutes. After the 15 minutes are up, check your fish – the foil should be puffed up – that is how you determine if it is ready or not. You can also carefully open up the foil and use your fork to poke around at the fish to make sure it is cooked. If it is not cooked, fold it back up as best you can, cover it, and leave it on for a few minutes longer.

Once it’s ready, you should get this…

IMG_9493

You are ready to chow down! If you still want a little extra flavor, go ahead and drizzle a little soy sauce or some siracha to add a kick to it! You can also pair the dish with qunioa and more veggies!

There you have it! Your guide to a quick dish of steamed fish and veggies! Enjoy :)

Blush + Lip Tint Supertrick

imageThe ever-asked question: if you had to leave the house wearing only one makeup product, what would it be?

For me, it’s a no-brainer. BLUSH. And not just blush… I guess this one’s kind of a cheat. I mean blush + blush turned lipstick.

This look is perfect for a Spring day in the sunshine! In my opinion, there’s nothing more feminine and charming than a soft pink cheek. The flush that a good blush provides brings an element of intrigue – suggesting something both guilty and playful. Good blush contouring is fun and, when done right, super-natural in an “I’m not wearing any makeup – my life always lends way to this flushed and fabulous look” kind of way ;)

Pair that with a lip stain to match your cheeky flush, and you’ve reached my all-time fave makeup look.

I actually came upon this genius idea by mistake. My favorite blush and lipgloss palate sit the blush and glosses way too close together, resulting in deposits of blush accumulating in all my light gloss colors! At first I was annoyed, but soon realized that the light pink lip glosses took on whatever color of blush I mixed into them! Genius mistake? Yes yes yes!!! Now I’m obsessed with this concept and do it on purpose all the time. As much as I love buying new lipsticks, this technique truly let’s you make your shades, customized to your needs and complexion. If you don’t have a spare nude lip palate lying around (umm, seriously? Who does?) I suggest mixing blush pigment into a tiny amount of Vaseline on the end of a Qtip. This keeps the integrity of your blush color perfectly and lets you make easy single use batches of lip stain! Just take some loose powder and mix with a tiny bit of vaseline and spread onto your lips.

20140420-130002.jpg
20140420-092323.jpg

Next, I blush my cheeks like crazy. I like to use a loose powder blush because it lets me pick up just the right amount. My favorite is Smashbox Halo Long Wear Blush in Peachy Dream.

Screen Shot 2014-04-20 at 1.14.44 PM

Not too much, of course, but don’t make the mistake of applying too little. Coming from a girl that turns tomato-red after only five minutes at the gym, I have the authority to claim that blush does look natural, even if you have a good amount of pigment sitting on your cheekbones.

20140420-125953.jpg

And voila! With one simple makeup product you’ve totally transformed your look, double-whammy style. Take that, you “I-won’t-leave-the-house-without-mascara” chicas.

Easter Fruit Salad

20140420-101349.jpg

20140420-101340.jpg

Happy Easter everyone! Whether or not you’re celebrating the holiday, it’s a beautiful day for brunch with friends and family! This delicious fruit salad recipe is super healthy and yummy for any meal – I could eat it all day long!

Just combine these ingredients into a bowl, toss, and serve!

-1/2 cantaloupe, balled
-10 strawberries, chopped
-20 grapes, whole
-1 cup spinach
-1/2 cup kale
-1/4 cup crumbled feta

No need for dressing, the fruit is sweet enough! If you’re really craving something extra, try drizzling some honey or agave nectar mixed with coconut oil. For a tangy approach, squeeze some lemon & grapefruit juice on top of your salad.

Festival Fashion

Well, it’s that time of year again! The time when you start seeing a sea of floral headbands, fringe on fringe, patriotic paraphernalia, novelty sunglasses, denim cutoffs, bathing suit tops, cowboy boots, and sunburns! It’s festival season! The kick-off was April 11th with the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, and Stagecoach following on April 25th (extended list of 2014 music festivals here)!

Although the music is the centrum of these festivals, we can’t help but turn our attention to the fashion. Some of my favorite music festival fashionistas are Katy Perry, Vanessa Hudgens, and Kate Bosworth. They all have unique styles, which balance each other out. Katy Perry is very geo/neon centric, Vanessa Hudgens is the epitome of boho chic, and Kate Bosworth sticks to the motto “less is more”. With all of the music festival style inspo, I couldn’t help but put together a style guide photoshoot featuring my beautiful friends and Halfsies very own, Larissa! Check it out!

(Leave us a comment if you are attending any music festivals this year! We would love to feature your style on our blog!)

Party in the USA

This patriotic look will definitely fit well at Stagecoach! All you really need are some boots, tank top, cut-off shorts, and a cowgirl hat. IMG_9303americanflagOn the left, we layered a faded blue printed cropped top over a red and white striped bikini top. We also added a boho flair with the beaded layered necklace and feathers in her hair. On the right, we wrapped a scarf around to make a cute midi top, pairing it with denim shorts, brown boots, and of course, a floral cowgirl hat. IMG_9281 torilars Cheetalicious

I LOVE cheetah print. It is one of my many obsessions because the print is so versatile, giving any outfit a classy, chic, street, or urban vibe. IMG_9246 meesh cheetahHow awesome is this outfit? From head to toe, this is one of my favorite pairings. The dress and pop of color create a girly look, while the layered necklaces, Obey hat, and cheetah converse, add a street/punk flair. tori cheetahERRMEERRGERRD. Although this printed body con dress stands out on its own, we wanted to add subtle bursts of color and more casual accessories – magenta vans, floral sunnies, and neon necklace & hat – adding a chic street look. larscheetaRawr. The cheetah top is actually a one-piece bathing suit I got at a thrift shop! With this look, we didn’t really have to add much – just a fedora hat, layered necklaces, and a pair of black cut-off shorts. To add, the hat is great to keep that desert sun out of your face. This outfit is simple yet sassy! cheetah1 IMG_9247Accessories

While attending music festivals, it is almost mandatory to wear an overload of accessories, it is often times what makes an outfit. We decided to showcase headbands, arm cuffs, and body jewelry stickers that are far different than the usual floral headdress or fill up half your arm bracelets, which can be an overkill. Here, we used accessories that are subtle, yet still give a boho chic flair! headbandzIMG_9376

Wearing mixed prints instantly gives you a summer and trendy look. They’re statement patterns that add dimension to your outfit, as well as give you a cultured edge.

IMG_9217I love this look because it is so effortless – cropped patterned top with high waisted shorts, and black gladiator sandals – can be the perfect outfit in the hot desert sun! Just remember to put on the spf!

IMG_9214I am obsessed with this outfit because she made that kimono cardigan the night before we did this shoot! Plus, this style of cardigan is very trendy and versatile. It is made of lightweight material, which makes it a great if you want to casually cover up. The graphic and bright patterns are also great for spring!

Crochet

What’s so great about crochet tops is that they are light and can breathe! Perfect for this Cali weather! You can wear a bandeau, thin tank, or bikini top underneath, along with some jewelry and denim shorts, creating a cool, yet cute festival look. LMTIMG_9433

It’s a wrap!

Sweet Tooth Review: Magnolia Bakery

20140409-114525.jpg
Restaurant Name: Magnolia Bakery
Location: 401 Bleecker Street and W. 11th Street, New York
& 8389 West 3rd Street at Orlando St., Los Angeles

Halfsies Rating: ★★★★★
Halfsies Bank: $$
Genre: Bakery
Great for: Sweet treats, birthday cakes, banana pudding

Magnolia Bakery is one of NYC’s finest bakeries, and I couldn’t help but go a little crazy with a late-night visit. Throw in a few large cups of milk and I was in sweet shop heaven!

The adorable decor makes you feel like you’re inside of your grandmother’s kitchen, and the comfort the sweet goodness provides is unparalleled!

What I loved: Everything (and I mean every single bite) was delicious! I also loved the warm atmosphere, friendly bakers, and cute homey decor

What I’d improve: The shop was a little small for the many late night visitors

What I’d recommend: The banana pudding! It was creamy and just banana-y enough to not be overpowering

20140409-114700.jpg20140409-114709.jpg20140409-115222.jpg20140409-115244.jpg

Magnolia makes their sweets fresh every morning, but they’re so out-of-control popular that the baking continues all through the day (and night!). I went by after dinner at 10:00pm – don’t worry, they’re open until 12:30 for you late-nighters – and the red velvet cupcakes were being freshly frosted. (LOOK! They invited me behind the counter to help out!) Of course, that means I had to eat one!

Yep – that giant bag is a pretty accurate reflection of just how much I really bought. I went for their famous vanilla cake with vanilla frosting, their chocolate cake, carrot cake, cupcakes, and of course their famous banana pudding.

Twist bands: Fad or Fabulous?

imageI’ve been wearing twist bands since college, and I can’t quite remember why I started. Perhaps the appeal of the mason jars filled with fun neon options at my favorite boutiques had something to do with it. Or maybe it was my hair stylist, yelling at me for my ever-splitting ends and long tangled hair.

To this day, you’ll never catch me sporting a regular hair tie again. In my opinion, the classic black hair elastic is passé – it’s both impractical & uncomfortable. (And let’s face it, not nearly as cuhhhhute as the images below!!)

My argument stands: these twisty babies are fab fashion statements that simultaneously serve a practical purpose! Can we ask for anything more??!

Check out some of the ways we pair our twist bands and let us know what you think! Can a hair tie really double as an accessory? We vote yes!!
