This past weekend, my good friend and I were finally able to hang out and take part in some pretty hip things in the heart of downtown LA, the Arts District. A place where the population is 95% hipsters and 5% other… Check out the places we explored!
Handsome Coffee Roasters – I am not a usually a devoted coffee drinker, but i promised my friend a good cup of joe! Not only is this place for the artisan coffee lovers, but it is also the haunt for the oh-so hip. I’m talking the fully bearded, indie-rockin, vintage wearin, straight black coffee drinking, hate to be called Hipsters, Hipsters! (I work in the Arts District, so I am technically a ‘Hipster’ by association…) Even though this was not exactly my cup of tea, I can safely say that I thoroughly enjoyed the experience.. and the coffee!
Art Share LA – A sanctuary for the arts in none other than the Arts District. Upstairs they provide subsidized lofts for the artists, and downstairs they have a community programmed facility offering classes, exhibitions and events! When I started working in the Arts District, I also began to volunteer some time at Art Share. I’ve grown to really love the place because it genuinely captures the spirit and soul of the Arts District. I couldn’t resist showing my friend this inspiring place. They were also prepping for a Gallery Exhibit Opening – Alliance Collective: Opifex. Stop by if you are in the neighborhood!

We got a little artsy with all the incredible street art…
*We also had brunch at Little Bear (see restaurant review) and played around at the newly opened Eightytwo barcade (coming soon on the blog)!

Genre: Belgian, Gastropub
Great for: Brunch, Dinner, Drinking, Late night hangout with friends
I stumbled upon Little Bear on my friend’s Instagram – I couldn’t stop thinking about her ‘Valencia’ filtered eggs benedict, so I decided to try it out. Little Bear is located in the Arts District in DTLA, on Industrial Street, across from one of my favorite restaurants, Church & State. I decided to take a stroll to Little Bear for brunch (Saturday/Sunday 10am – 3pm) – there was absolutely no crowd and we were seated immediately. They had an array to choose from, but i went with the Smoked Salmon Benedict, while my friend had The Grizzly. We both licked our plates clean! It was ‘beary’ good, and I can’t wait to go back for dinner and burr!
What I loved: Chill ambiance and very filling!
What I’d improve: Parking (that’s LA for you!) and wish the waiter was a little friendlier.
What I’d recommend: Smoked Salmon Benedict & The Grizzly (my friend LOVED it)
I’m in the land of unparalleled drink & indulgence (**aka NYC!) for a few days, so what better way to start the weekend than with a signature Serrano Pepper Margarita?!
These have been around for a while, but my first time having one (someone tell me why I waited this long?!) was today! Not only is this a super light cocktail, but it’s delicious and really not thaaat bad for ya! Plus, the serrano peppers add a crazy dimension of flavor. If you want to get extra artsy, blend some strawberries in to taste!
They’re so great that we brought the party home and kept mixing margs all afternoon.
Here’s what you need per glass:
- 1 Serrano pepper
- 2-3 strawberries, if desired (I like mine better without)
- 1 tablespoon agave syrup
- 2 oz soda wata
- 1 oz lemon/lime juice
- 2 oz tequila
- 2-3 large icecubes
Blend the concoction (I like to blend all contents and add in ice afterwards). Slice a lime or two for visual effect & enjoy (responsibly)!
If you’re like the rest of us, you’ve realized it’s Spring! While the birdies chirping and the little flowers blooming bring us joy, the idea that Summer is just around the corner means that it’s time to whip into shape! Nix the breakfast burritos & waffles, and try this delightfully refreshing wonder-smoothie for a change! Both protein and antioxidant packed, this has become my post yoga go-to breakfast!
Here’s what you’ll need:
- 1/4 cup raspberries
- 1/4 cup chopped strawberries
- 6oz almond milk
- 2oz POM Wonderful
- 1 scoop vanilla protein powder
- 3 ice cubes
Blend on high for about 30 seconds. If you have a blender bottle you can even make this bad boy pre-workout, like I do! Store in a cool place at the gym and shake it up when you’re ready to enjoy!
Life is full of surprises! Saturday afternoon, my family and I threw a surprise birthday party for my Grandma! Close friends and family gathered to celebrate this inspiring and beautiful woman! She was absolutely shocked and so utterly excited! The highlight of the day was when I asked her how old she was, and she responded with, “old enough to be your Grandma!” Best.Answer.Ever. Overall, it was a wonderful day with the 5 most important G’s… Good Friends, Good Family, Good Food, Good Fun, and GRANDMA! Cheers!
Today, I went to my co-worker’s carnival themed baby shower! There was a photo wall, balloon animals, concession stand (popcorn, churro, cotton candy machines), and even a game area! It was a lovely day full of food, framily, and fun! Check it out :)
Tonight’s beautiful moon brought to mind this lovely quote that’s perfectly fitting for an introspective Sunday night.
Like the moon, our imperfections make us beautiful!
Have a great week everyone! ♥
Restaurant Name: LeKa

Halfsies Rating: ★★★★☆

Genre: Contemporary French-Californian
Great for: Working lunch, meetings
LeKa is a go-to spot for my team, as it’s an easy block away from our DTLA office and offers a fantastic array of unique dishes. The restaurant puts an up-scale twist on common plates like salmon, pizza, burgers, and more. Since we’re regulars here, we were invited to stop by for a tasting of some new menu items. Check it out and I’m sure you’ll be drooling like we were! It’s no wonder we love this place.
What I loved: Filling lunch that won’t leave you in an afternoon food-coma; great ambience
What I’d improve: A little pricey for the everyday
What I’d recommend: Curried cauliflower soup, brussel sprouts, grilled pork belly meatballs, brioche bread pudding
